Machu Picchu is elected as the most desired destination among travelers

The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in southeastern Peru, was elected by a website hosting as the travelers desired destination in the world, announced Saturday the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva.

The page launched a contest called "My great adventure" to choose among its users a favorite destination for tourists and the sanctuary Inca won by more than a million votes.

"This is the result of ongoing work to promote one of the most famous destinations of our country in major source countries of tourists, special care and conservation of local authorities carry on the Inca sanctuary, which received 1,177. 308 tourists in 2013, "said the Peruvian minister.

Silva explained that participants chose three favorite travel adventures of a list of 30 proposals, and Machu Picchu exceeded the Moon Party (Thailand), fly in a balloon in Cappadocia (Turkey), climbing Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), a safari in the Kruger National Park (South Africa) and travel to Antarctica.

"That a Peruvian destination is the world's most desirable among a considerable number of voters and destinations reveals that our country is in the mind of the consumer," he said. Silva noted that the recent discovery of a new section on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu will diversify the tourism offer and offer visitors a different perspective of the Inca citadel.

"This finding is further proof of the greatness of our ancestors and because Peru is one of the most important archaeological destinations in the world," he said.

The new stretch of discovered Machu Picchu Inca Trail is about a mile long and between 1.20 and 1.40 meters wide, according to the Department of Culture Decentralized (DDC) of Cuzco.
